When Cerebus, a private owned firm, bought out Mercedes Benz's Chrysler branch, things were looking up for Chrysler. They were finally going to get a good head on their shoulders, and come out strong, leaving GM and Ford behind them.
Sadly, as of today, it is rumored that Dodge Viper may be cut from their line up. The only American car to compete in price and performance with the Corvette, may have its head on the chopping block. The Viper was Chrysler's only high performance vehicle, and the rival to the Chevrolet Corvette. It was brought from concept to production vehicle in a very short period of time. When released in 1992 it was like nothing else on the road. V10 with 400 hp and styling that would catch the eye of anyone. At a low sticker price of $70k, that could compete with cars in the $140k range.
Today, it is a 550 hp beast with great handling, but a slightly higher sticker price: $83k. Cerebus says the vehicle costs too much to produce, and it has too low of a production number. Oddly enough, they sell just about all of them every year. Something no other vehicle in their line up does. Oh, and the EPA's new standards for an avg. of 35 mpg (over full vehicle lineup) isn't helping the Viper's cause. Oh, and the horribly designed Sebring is another F*CK up that is going to lead to the death of the Viper.
The day they end Viper production will be a sad day in automotive hissssssstory. With LeMans wins and racing records made in its short lifetime.
